Investigative journalist Roman Anin, the founder and publisher of iStories, has been stripped of his Russian citizenship. Born in Moldova, Anin acquired Russian citizenship in 2006. In March 2025, Anin and iStories journalist Ekaterina Fomina were sentenced in absentia to eight and a half years in prison under Russia’s legislation on so-called military “fake news” (Clause “d”, Part 2, Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). The case related to news summaries and an investigation into the killing of civilians in Bucha. A law allowing the revocation of acquired Russian citizenship for convictions under articles on military “fake news” and on “discrediting” the Russian army came into force in October 2023.
