A criminal case has been opened against Ural journalist and human rights activist Elena Shukaeva for failing to fulfil the obligations of a “foreign agent” (Article 330.1, Part 2 of the Criminal Code). Prior to this, several administrative cases had been filed against her. Between September 2023 and October 2024, Yekaterinburg courts fined Shukaeva at least five times, totalling 160,000 rubles (€1,648). She was added to the “foreign agents” register on September 9, 2022, and left Russia three weeks later.
