At the Sarpi border, guards informed GIPA journalism scholar and freelance journalist Javid Ahmedov that he had been fined GEL 5,000 (EUR 1,600) for allegedly “artificially blocking the road” on Rustaveli Avenue. Javid wrote on Facebook that he had only been carrying out his journalistic duties and was unaware of the fine until attempting to cross the border. He said that after telling police he no longer wished to leave the country, officers stamped his passport anyway and told him he would have to pay the fine upon returning to Georgia.
