The Surgut City Court sentenced Shmonin to 8 years in prison after finding him guilty of extortion and distribution of pornography. According to Shmonin, he was persecuted after the release of the film «Criminal Oil» about oil theft in Yugra. Shmonin was charged with defamation of employees of the economic security department of Samotlorneftegaz and Federal Security Service officer Roman Chernogor.
