In Kazan, sociologist and publicist Iskander Yasaveyev was charged with incitement to hatred or hostility (Article 20.3.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation). Yasaveyev was handed the ruling on the initiation of the case at the Centre for Combating Extremism, where he came at the invitation of an officer on the pretext of returning items seized during last year’s search. The case was initiated because of Yasaveyev’s June column in Idel.Realities: «Patsan-style or Soviet-style: Why is Russia at war?». In the text, the sociologist discusses Vladimir Putin’s decision to go to war with Ukraine and the connection between his actions and the culture of street gangs in the USSR. The linguistic expertise claims that the text contains calls for violence «against a social group on the grounds of nationality», as well as «humiliation of human dignity» of this group and incitement of enmity towards it.
