An issue of the independent newspaper Svaboda of October 17, 1997 was declared «extremist materials» in Belarus. The corresponding decision was made by the Minsk District Court. It is unknown what exactly the claims to the issue are. Probably, the article about the impeachment of Aliaksandr Lukashenka, which was discussed by the deputies of the Belarusian parliament at the meeting, was considered to be some kind of a libel. The Supreme Councel adopted a statement on «the presence of signs of crime in Lukashenka’s actions» and found «impossible for Lukashenka to perform the duties of president of Belarus», — wrote the media outlet.
