A criminal court in Almaty sentenced journalist Vladimir Severny to 7 years of imprisonment with a sentence to be served in a medium security institution. His wife, blogger Nargiz Severnaya, was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment with a suspended sentence of five years. She remains under house arrest. According to the prosecution’s version, the journalists extorted KZT 15 million from the businesswoman from Aktau for not publishing negative materials. The journalists insist on their innocence. The defence claims that Nargiz Severnaya appealed to the Aktau philanthropist with a request to help her and her husband in solving the flat issue. Nargiz Severnaya considers the case against them as an «order» to neutralise her husband. Vladimir Severny is a military journalist who covers problems in the army.
